We naturally want to respond to the awful tragedy in Haiti ten days ago. Our hearts go out to every person in that nation as well as to all Haitian people who are suffering because of the loss of loved ones. They already have been enduring the effects of much poverty. We want to save all of them from further harm. Thus, we pray fervently for each of them as well as for those giving help. Not only do we pray for them, but we want to give them material assistance. So, our parish and the other parishes of the Archdiocese have been taking special collections just for this purpose. Catholic Relief Services is also on the scene. Moreover, there are other charitable organizations doing what they can.
This need within each of us to help others comes from God. We are created in His image and likeness. Of course, this does not mean that we look like Him; He is pure Spirit. Rather, it means that we are created with souls that have the capacity to love much. It is good to reflect on the love of God within us. How much do we use this love? How far do we extend it? God does not hold back. The more that we love, the more do we reflect the image of God.
May each of us continue to pray for those in Haiti and to do all that we can for them. We are God’s hands, feet, and voice. Let us allow God’s love for them come through us.
